The History of Market Matters Inc.

In Fall 2001, Professor Ralph Christy inaugurated the Emerging Markets Program at Cornell University, a research program that brings together faculty and students interested in studying emerging markets around the world. While the EMP was pioneering in its own right, Christy also envisioned the creation of a new organization that facilitates discussions and an exchange of information and knowledge among entrepreneurs in emerging markets and leading practitioners and academics around the world. The result was the birth of Market Matters, Inc., a nonprofit organization, in 2002. Started with an office in Ithaca, NY, MM, Inc.’s international reach has grown steadily, and in 2006, it opened a second office in South Africa. Through its programs, MM, Inc. brings to life Christy’s vision of an organization that puts marketing principles, strategies, and research findings into practice to foster economic development and to open up resources to enterprising individuals in emerging markets.
